Local girl celebrates one year seizure free, achieves goal of collecting 100 news shirts

Sally Moore was in sixth grade when she began collecting news shirts, but it wasn't until last year she set a goal to reach 100 of them.

“I didn't think I would be at 100 right now. I thought it would take forever,” Sally said.

This past Sunday, she finally reached that goal.

That’s not the only reason she's celebrating today...because she's also one year seizure free.

Sally's mom, Kim Moore, says collecting news shirts has been a way for Sally to get through that difficult time.

“When we made it through certain stages, like the 3 month mark, the 6 month mark, we would also pick out a new shirt. That would turn those milestones into something more positive,” Kim said.

Sally is heading into her junior year at Windber Area High School, but her love for TV started when she was three, her mom says.

Once Sally got to Middle School, she joined Windber News, where she helped film videos and host her own segments.

After years of loving the news, in May of 2018, she got to meet her idol: NBC’s Lester Holt.

Lester and Sally got a picture together, and it was posted to the Instagram and Twitter pages of NBC Nightly News.

“I almost cried,” Sally said, talking about when she saw the posts.

Neighbors, teachers, friends, community members, and family all pitched in to help Sally reach her goal.

Sally even reached out to news stations through her own Instagam account -- called “Sally's News Shirts” -- asking to send shirts to her.

This was also a bonding experience for her and her dad, Bo Moore.

"Sally and I do a lot of road trips, and quite often when we find out that there's a TV station there, we’ll try to link up with the news department and find out if we can do a tour,” Bo said.

Together, he says they've traveled all over the east coast, even making a trip to Alaska and visiting a news station there.

Her favorite TV station of all of them, she says, is WJAC.

For everybody who knows her, knows that Sally Moore, is already famous.
